Laurena devoted over
a decade of her life and learning to the art of Flamenco dance, song, and
music. She specifically focused on the unique Flamenco style of Jerez de
la Frontera, Spain, where she made her home in the late 90's. Considered
as one of the most competent improvisational dancers in the US, Laurena
is known for her ability to express the anguish and power of Cante Flamenco
(Flamenco Singing) through movement; unhindered by "Choreography"
or the need for excessive rehearsal. She believes that spontaneity and surprise
are critical components of the Flamenco experience.
Passionate about the tradition of Flamenco, she exposed her students to
the Cante at every level of their dance study, pushing them to develop musicality
as well as physical interpretation of the art form. Her work with absolute
beginners through professional level dancers over the past 9 years made
her one of the Northwest's most sought-after teachers.
As a performer, Laurena considers herself a "progressive thinking traditionalist"
who strives to introduce Flamenco to diverse audiences. While staying true
to her roots in pure Flamenco dance, she also pushes creative and musical
boundaries by collaborating with non-traditional artists and instruments
not often found in Flamenco.
She was the first person to ever fuse Flamenco with traditional Korean music.
Her work with Flamencello and The Lorca Project, which highlighted the Cello
and Spoken Word Poetry, respectively, garnered great critical acclaim and
laid a strong foundation for continual exploration.

in 2005. Her work with Flamencello and The Lorca Project, which highlighted
